Protecting Children & Young People in the Digital Age
At Boomerang, safety has always been our top priority—both in the skies and on the ground.
That’s why our Miami-based Missions team feel compelled to amplify a warning recently issued by state FBI agents and local officials about a sharp rise in sextortion – a disturbing online threat targeting vulnerable children – and share what we’re doing to help protect young lives.
According to FBI Jacksonville, sextortion cases reported through their Internet Crime Complaint Center have soared by 60% through July 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, involving nearly $1 million in losses. These predators are no longer operating from afar – they’re striking children where they feel safest: online and in their own homes.
Sextortion can arise on any digital platform – social media, messaging apps, even gaming networks – online spaces where children interact. Predators coerce minors into sending explicit images and then threaten to release that material unless they provide more or pay money. This manipulation leaves victims feeling ashamed and trapped, often preventing them from seeking help.
Special Agent in Charge Jason Carley stressed the urgency: “These predators are relentless and adapt quickly. By recognizing warning signs, parents and caregivers can help protect their children.” The FBI recommends proactive monitoring of children’s online activity, open conversations about internet safety, and swift reporting of suspicious behavior.
Boomerang Missions Commitment: Safeguarding the Future in the Air & on the Ground
Humanitarian Reach
Boomerang Missions frequently provides chartered flights for humanitarian purposes – whether transporting vulnerable people to delivering support where it’s needed most. Protecting children’s welfare is integral to our mission.
Local Support Initiatives
Miami’s diverse communities deserve access to resources. Wherever we can, we support those offering counseling and aid to survivors and when we see the need, actively collaborate with law enforcement to amplify the message throughout South Florida.
Understanding Sextortion & What We Can All Do
What it is: Sextortion involves coercion – usually non‑violent – where predators threaten to release sexual images unless victims comply with further demands.
Why it works: These criminals exploit trust and fear, often impersonating peers or romantic interests to ensnare children.
Immediate Steps:
- Monitor your child’s digital world – including social apps and gaming platforms.
- Keep open, judgment-free communication – let them know they’re not in trouble if they seek help.
- Encourage children to report uncomfortable online interactions immediately.
- If victimized, report to the FBI via your local office, call 1‑800‑CALL‑FBI, or submit a tip online.
Together We Can Make a Change
The FBI’s alert about a spike in sextortion is a sobering reminder of the threats children face online. As a responsible member of the Miami aviation and humanitarian community, Boomerang Missions stands firmly alongside families, schools, and law enforcement, offering awareness, advocacy, and actionable support.
Together, we can all help ensure our children are safe to explore, learn, and connect – online and off – without fear.
